Oracy

At Rokesly Junior School, we believe that learning to communicate effectively equips our children with the skills they need to actively engage with the world around them. We are committed to developing and embedding a culture of oracy. Through learning to talk and learning through talk, we aim to foster articulate communicators of the future, enhancing our children’s spoken language and written outcomes. We want every child to find their voice so that every child becomes an effective communicator.

We aim for all pupils to:

  • speak audibly and fluently with an increasing command of Standard English
  • gain, maintain and monitor the interest of listeners while speaking
  • maintain attention while actively listening to adults and their peers
  • receive constructive feedback on their spoken language and listening
  • understand how and when to participate in conversations, staying on topic and responding appropriately
  • ask relevant questions to extend their understanding and knowledge
  • have confidence in their own answers, arguments and opinions and articulate and justify them clearly
  • have a willingness to develop and change their ideas, evaluating and building on the contributions of others
  • have a curiosity for new and sophisticated vocabulary and use it in their spoken and written language
  • adapt their communication for a variety of purposes and audiences, selecting and using appropriate registers
  • participate in discussions, presentations, performances, role play, improvisations and debates
  • read aloud their own writing, to a group or the whole class, using appropriate intonation and controlling their tone and volume so that the meaning is clear
  • value the diversity of languages, dialects and accents within our community

Our commitment to oracy at Rokesly Junior School aligns with our broader vision of excellence for all, empowering our children to become effective communicators who can contribute positively to our school community and the wider world.
